Friday Evening Round-Up

I’ve been nursing a nasty case of bronchitis this week, so I think that I’m only going to have energy to do a round-up style post this evening.  Let’s hit the ground running:

NY-20: Recently-ousted ex-Rep. John Sweeney is apparently mulling a rematch against Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand.  I can only pray that the local GOP is foolish and/or desperate enough to let this thug try again. (Hat tip to the Political Wire.)
TN-Sen: Dailykos diarist Sidof79 has an excellent rundown of possible competitors against Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander next year, from Harold Ford, Jr. to Tim McGraw.
NC-Sen: In a hypothetical election match-up, Sen. Elizabeth Dole beats Democratic Rep. Bob Etheridge by a 45-30 margin, according to a new poll by Public Policy Polling.  That’s not especially strong.  (Hat-tips to Blue South and Senate 2008 Guru.)
LA-Gov: According to the Cook Political Report, former Democratic Sen. John Breaux is seriously considering running for Governor this year.  Breaux’s Senate politics relied heavily on backroom, floor-crossing “dealmaking”, but I’d be content to let him have a try at this.  He’s our best shot at keeping the Louisiana Gubernatorial office in the Blue column.
MI-07: The locals blast Republican Tim Walberg for supporting escalation in Iraq.

  1. I thought I had read, only the the day, that he’s already done a fund-raiser for the incumbent?

    just a week ago yesterday:

LOUISIANA: The rumors that retired US Senator John Breaux (D) would run for Louisiana Governor are clearly false. According to New Orleans CityBusiness, Breaux hosted a pricey fundraiser in DC this week for Blanco. The newspaper reported “Breaux is strongly supporting” Blanco.

  2. Is there any reason no one seems to be paying attention to Dole in NC? Seems like she could be vulnerable, especially if they got term-limited Gov. Easley to run against her

  3. Is it at all possible that John Breaux running for governor would come back to bite Mary Landrieu in the rear?

Assuming that Rep. Bobby Jindal is the strongest staetwide Republican the party can field, I imagine that he could fight a hard fought race with Breaux for Governor, build up substantial statewide name ID with a narrow loss (remember demographic changes) and use his new found cachet to stomp out Sen. Landrieu.  I don’t know enough about LA politics, especially post-Katrina to answer this possibility, but does somebody else have some more on-the-ground insight?

  4. Walberg-R will come to regret that vote. I fully expect Joe Shwarz will successfully challenge Walberg-CFG, now that Walberg will have a record to run on he’s most certainly in danger. The big question is whether or not Shwarz will switch parties to carry this out.

Hey James: Me too on the “Bronchitis”, sucks. Drink alot of liquids, the chicken soup thing, and a codine based cough medicine helps..LOL.
